Garnet


Garnet – January Birthstone

The garnet, revered for thousands of years, was found to have been used by ancient Egyptian artisans in jewelry as early as 3000 B.C.   The continuing popularity of the garnet is due to its stunning beauty and versatility as a gemstone.  Garnets are cherished for their colors, brilliance and transparency.

Garnets occur in every color except blue:

Almandine – Rich, deep red

Hessonite – Yellow-orange to reddish-orange, sometimes known as “cinnamon stone”

Pyrope – Deep red

Rhodolite – Purplish red

Spessartite – Yellow-orange to reddish-brown

Tsavorite – Brilliant, vibrant green (most rare)

Garnets are found in many locations around the world including Australia, Brazil, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and the United States.  In the United States, garnets have been found in many locations including Arizona, Idaho, North Carolina, and Utah.
